A Great Resource: Your Local Comic Shop

A one-on-one relationship between a local comic book store and a local school or library is ultimately fruitful for all concerned. Comic book stores are a good match to their communities' schools and libraries for many reasons.

For schools, the local comic book store is probably already something of a hang-out for students, particularly boys. Visiting and patronizing the comic book store gives teachers an opportunity to see another side of their students and figure out which properties and stories motivate them to read.

Additionally, comic book stores cater to readers, the same demographic sought by libraries. Unlike comics shops, though, libraries often have difficulty attracting and retaining the interest of younger males, a market well-served by the comic book industry. Conversely, comic book stores have historically had difficulty in attracting a female clientele...precisely the people who use libraries most. Putting graphic novels into libraries, then, accomplishes two goals – it helps the libraries reach young men, and also awakens women and girls to the medium.

So, how do you go about finding and dealing with your local comic shop? Well, it’s easier than you think. By following these easy steps, you’ll be coordinating with your local comic shop in no time!
